In May of 2018, I was sworn is as AU Phi Alpha Delta's (PAD) President for the 2018-2019 academic year. As President, it is my job to oversee the operation of the fraternity as well ensure that we are upholding the values of professionalism and fostering brotherhood. I work with a team of 14 members that make up the executive board. Together, we plan professional, philanthropy, and social events that help us achieve our goals. Within the past months, I have helped plan numerous professional events such as alumni panel events, LSAT presentations, and networking events. In addition, PAD participated in giving back to the community by volunteering at the DC Central Kitchen and holding a fundraiser for Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law, a pro bono legal aid to immigrant students whose constitutional rights to attend public schools has been denied as well as to obtain equal oppurtunity for minorities by addressing factors that contribute to racial justice and economic oppurtunity. At the end of the fundraiser for Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law, we surpassed our goal of $500 and raised over $600.
Assistant Philanthropy Chair 2017-2018
In May of 2017, I was appointed the "assistant to philanthropy chair" position. My primary role was to assist the philanthropy chair in planning different fundraisers for different organizations. In October of 2017, we raised money as well as attended the 5K Walk/Run Against Addiction for Shatterproof, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to ending devastation addiction causes families. In November of 2017, we held a meal swipe drive for the homeless where brothers of PAD donated their leftover meal swipes at the end of the semester. Using those leftover meal swipes, the brothers of PAD bought Subway sandwiches and distributed them to homeless people around DC. In May of 2018, I assisted the philanthropy chair in planning an event that raised money for Make-A-Wish. At the end of the event, we raised over $500 for Make-A-Wish.
SPA Leadership Program Teaching Assistant 2018-2019 For the 2018-2019 academic year, I was chosen to serve as a Second Year TA for the SPA Leadership program. As a TA, I guide a group of 7 students with their social action projects. These projects include research in topics such as: immigration, breed specific legislation, art programming in schools, anxiety and it's effect on student performance, and effect of school to prison pipeline. Being a TA for this program has been one of the most rewarding tasks I have done in my time at American University. Not only am I helping these students become a better leader, but they are helping me become one as well and I am able to hone skills that I will need and carry on later in life.
The District Against Homelessness Creator of Project As a second year student in the SPA Leadership Program, my social action project was aimed at the high rates of homelessness in DC, specifically family homelessness. Therefore, for my project, I decided to start creating a program for homeless families within the DC area that would help them get out of the cycle of homelessness. I spent my second year researching and creating awareness on the issue. I created a website for my project as well as a Facebook page. Since then, I have been posting some content about homelessness in DC. In April of 2018, I held a panel event with different representatives in the DC area to talk about the current homelessness crisis that has been going on. Moving forward, my plan is to progress this program to an actual organization that helps homeless families in the area. For the adults, my goal is to help them re enter or enter the workforce through hosting various professional development workshops such as how to dress for an interview, how to do a resume, cover letter, etc. For the children, my goal is to help motivate them to pursue higher education and focus on their well being and mental health. I am hoping to accomplish this through a mentorship program. Though I am taking my time with this project, by the end of next year, I want to have this organization up and running and start helping families in need.
